OUR MISSION
Giving Retired Champions a Place to Call Home
Located in Orillia, Ontario, Gillian's Greyhound Adoption (GGA) is a small but mighty National Greyhound Association-endorsed, pro-greyhound pro-racing adoption group recognized by the World Greyhound Organisation. We are proud to be a chapter of Greyhound Pets of America (GPA), the largest greyhound adoption organization in North America GGA-GPA specialize in adoptions and rehabilitation/behavioural referrals for retired racing greyhounds. Our deep connection to many of the hounds in our care sets us apart. These greyhounds often come from the kennels of our friends-owners, trainers, and breeders we know and trust. We are passionate about ensuring their transition from professional athlete to professional pet is as successful as their racing careers.
Why Adopt a Retired Greyhound?
Gentle Companions
Greyhounds are famously docile and affectionate, making them incredibly peaceful and loving additions to any home.
Low-Impact Lifestyle
These '45-mph couch potatoes' only need a short daily walk combined with plenty of nap time on a soft bed.
Clean & Quiet
They shed minimally, have very little 'doggy odor,' and rarely bark, making them perfect for apartment life.
Pre-Trained Manners
Retired racers are accustomed to lead walking and gentle handling, often making them easier to train than puppies.
Social Nature
Most greyhounds enjoy the company of other dogs and quickly become bonded, loyal members of their human family.
A Deserving Retirement
By adopting, you give an amazing animal a soft place to land after their racing career, which is the ultimate reward.
Retired, Not Rescued
At GGA-GPA, we do not characterize retired racing greyhounds as “rescues,” and reputable adoption groups across the greyhound community share this perspective. These dogs are not coming from situations of neglect or abandonment; rather, they are retiring from professional athletic careers where they have been raised, trained, and cared for by individuals who value their health, safety, and wellbeing.
Retirement simply marks the transition from life on the track to life in a home. What these greyhounds need is not saving, but a thoughtful and loving home that respects their past while helping them thrive in their next chapter. Our adopters understand and embrace this distinction, celebrating both the legacy and the remarkable potential of these extraordinary athletes.
At GGA-GPA, our role is to facilitate that transition. Our greyhounds are retired professional athletes moving from their racing careers into life as cherished family companions. They arrive having been well cared for throughout their careers, and our mission is to ensure they receive the peaceful, comfortable, and loving retirement they have earned.
Finding Homes Retired Racing Champions
At GGA-GPA, adoption is approached with care, responsibility, and purpose. Our goal is never casual placement; it is to find the right home for each retired racing greyhound based on that individual dog’s needs, personality, and history. Every greyhound is unique, and thoughtful matching is essential to ensuring a successful and lasting transition from track life to home life.
We value adopters who share our respect for the sport of greyhound racing and the community that has supported these dogs throughout their careers. Individuals who understand and appreciate this background are often the best candidates to welcome a retired racer into their home. Those who share our values and commitment to greyhound welfare are always welcome. For those whose views are not aligned with the racing industry, we respectfully encourage exploring other breeds or adoption opportunities that may be a better fit.
When you adopt from GGA-GPA, you are not simply bringing home a pet. You are honouring the legacy of a retired professional athlete and opening your home to a greyhound with an extraordinary story. At Gillian’s Greyhound Adoption – Greyhound Pets of America, we bridge the transition between the track and the home, helping these graceful athletes begin the next chapter of their lives.
Greyhounds are known for their quiet loyalty, gentle nature, and calm presence, qualities that make them exceptional companions. Our dedicated team works carefully to match each retired racer with a family that appreciates their tranquil spirit and unique background, ensuring their retirement is filled with love, comfort, and plenty of soft places to rest.
