Adoption Requirements
While anyone is welcome to submit an adoption application through GGA-GPA, the likelihood and timing of placement will depend on how closely an applicant aligns with the criteria outlined below.
Welcoming a retired racing greyhound into your home is a meaningful commitment to lifelong companionship. Our structured rehoming process is designed to ensure that each former racing athlete is thoughtfully matched with a home environment suited to their unique personality, history, and needs.
- Mature, responsible adults (and children aged 8+): A stable environment is key for our greyhounds to thrive.
- Prior greyhound/dog experience (preferred): Familiarity with greyhounds or other dogs is a valuable asset. Adopters who understand training principles are better equipped.
- Good communication skills: Adopters must follow GGA-GPA’s detailed going-home protocol and be open to guidance.
- Willingness to collaborate: GGA-GPA adopters work with us to ensure the best outcome for the hound.
- No cats: Homes must be cat-free to ensure the safety and comfort of the greyhound.
- No off-breed dogs (preferred): Resident dogs must be well-balanced and compatible with greyhounds.
- Located in Ontario, Canada: Plumements are typically done in Ontario, though placements across North America may be considered.
- Pro-racing, pro-greyhound: We seek adopters who respect the legacy of retired racers and support the NGA racing circuit.
